George Achkar Salame | Animal Rights, Food, and Justice in Lebanon

George Achkar Salame

Political Vegan Activist

Samer speaks with George Achkar Salame, an animal rights activist who says the two fights, for animals and for people, are one. George describes the backpacking trip in Southeast Asia where he found himself face to face with a cow he had only ever seen as food, and how that led him into activism in Lebanon: Anonymous for the Voiceless, the country’s first “Cube of Truth” street actions showing slaughterhouse footage, and now a push for animal protection in law, inspired by the Party for the Animals. They talk about why we love cats and dogs and eat cows and chickens, how culture, religion, profit and colonialism shape what we eat, and how rarely his grandfather’s generation ate meat: in Faraya, maybe once a month.
