Peanut Butter

When we filmed this episode, a kilo of peanuts cost about $7 and a kilo of supermarket peanut butter about $23. Yal does the sum: making it yourself saved around $16 a kilo.

Price is not the only difference. Many shop peanut butters add sugar and palm oil. Homemade has only what you put in it: roasted peanuts, a spoon of olive oil, a pinch of salt. Sweeten it or spice it if you like. The same method works with almonds, cashews or any other nut or seed.

The Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1kg raw peanuts
  • 2 Tbsp Olive oil
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Roast the peanuts. Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat to 176°C. Place the peanuts on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until lightly golden-brown and glossy with oil, about 15 minutes.
  2. Process the peanuts in a food processor
  3. Add the salt, the oil, and any sweetener or spices you like

Optional add-ins

maple syrup, medjool dates, cinnamon, vanilla extract, cacao, or any other sweetener/spice to taste
